Education
I suppose since I graduated in the summer of 2005 with a Masters in Physics, I can call myself a Physicist. During the summer of 2007 I decided that I was not enjoying studying for my PhD so I gave it up. I am considering going back to University this September / October to study for a masters degree in computing.
Employment
Currently, I work for the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham as a Graduate Technologist. I work on the LISA Pathfinder space mission writing software for ground tests of the Phasemeter unit. This device will measure the distance between two test masses on board the LISA Pathfinder satellite.
Freetime and Hobbies
In my freetime I enjoy playing around with various things in Linux. I have experience setting up small networks with print servers, streaming music servers, shared directories with NFS and SAMBA and shortly I will be setting up a DNS server. I also plan to have a go at setting up LVM to allow easy changes to be made to a file system made up from multiple drives.
I run Ubuntu on all of my machines and really like the open source ideals. I try to explain to as many people as I can why Open Source makes sense and why using proprietary file formats etc is a very bad idea!
I also enjoy listening to all sorts of music and watching different films. I would describe my music tastes as eclectic and enjoy pretty much anything.
